Admire the 800-year-old town that boasts one of Austria’s oldest historic town centres and Renaissance courtyards, which today accommodates modern boutiques, stylish bars, and beautiful beer gardens. Explore the famous landmark of the city, the Lindwurm monument, which was begun by Ulrich Vogelsang in 1582 and was completed by his brother Andreas Vogelsang in 1590. The city has been awarded the prestigious award of “Europa Nostra Diploma of Merit” thrice, which is a record itself for a European city. Learn how the legendary Lindwurm, a nordic snakelike dragon that supposedly lived near the city, was defeated but survived to this day in the coat-of-arms of the city.

This walking tour of Klagenfurt’s historic Old Town begins at the Fellner & Helmer–designed Stadttheater near Schillerpark and follows Ursulinengasse to the 17th-century Stadtpfarrturm, an Eclecticism-style church with panoramic tower views. Continuing into the city’s oldest quarter, you visit the late-16th-century Landhaus with its twin towers, courtyard, and Obelisk fountain, then pass through the adjacent park to reach the notable Wörtherseemandl fountain, surrounded by cafés and restaurants. The route then leads to the baroque Klagenfurt Cathedral on Domplatz, also dating from the late 16th century and dedicated to the Holy Trinity. The tour concludes at Minimundus, a unique attraction featuring 159 miniature models of famous monuments from 40 countries.
