About This Tour

Originally built as a mausoleum for Emperor Hadrian and his family, the building has been used and transformed many times over the years. Though its past is not forgotten, on this tour you'll discover how the Popes converted the structure into a castle, which connected to St. Peter's Basilica through the passetto (an elevated passageway) and how it was also used by the Popes as their private residence, a prison, a place for public executions and the State Treasury. The tour will end in Piazza Navona where you can admire the Fountains of Bernini, the Egyptian Obelisk, the Pamphili Palace, and the Church of Saint Agnes.
