Terceira Volcanic Landscape Tours: Explore Azores' Fiery Heart

During four hours you will have the chance to  find out how the island was born. Discovering the genesis of the island exploring the interior of the island and the major volcanos full of wonderful landscapes, pure nature and unforgettable moments, Visit Algar do Carvão, known for being the only volcano that you can visit the insides of it. Join us for a full-day adventure exploring Terceira’s most stunning landscapes, charming towns, and must-see highlights at a relaxed pace. Start with breathtaking views from Monte Brasil, then head to the iconic viewpoints of Ilhéu das Cabras and Serra do Cume. Enjoy free time for lunch and exploring in Praia da Vitória (lunch not included), followed by a visit to the volcanic pools of Biscoitos. End the day with a local cheese tasting and stories about Terceira’s traditions. Pickup between 10:00 and 10:15 in Angra do Heroísmo. Return by late afternoon. If time allows, we’ll include bonus stops. A perfect way to connect with the real Terceira.

Come with us on a hiking trail located in the interior part of Terceira Island, located in the area of the Natural Reservation of Mistérios Negros and Serra de Santa Bárbara, and be surrounded by a beautiful forest of cryptomerias and enjoy the volcanic rock landscape, natural lagoons and endemic vegetation.

During the visit, maps and additional information on other points of interest to be visited are provided, as well as recommendations on what to eat and where to eat. We indicate the places where visitors can buy local products and souvenirs.The visit is made at the pace that the visitor desires, according to their expectations. The tour of Lagoons & Volcanoes is a combination of two activities ( a walking trail and afternoon minivan tour with focus on the volcanology aspect) with lunch with drinks included, in a total of 8 hours of tour. Enjoy the morning part through the hiking trail of Mistérios Negros, a 5-kilometer walk that stands out for its extreme natural beauty, be it lagoons and cryptomeria forests or endemic vegetation (Azoric), or even volcanic landscape. Its level of difficulty is medium, with ap. 100 mt, in an irregular terrain. In the afternoon part you're invited to visit the interior of an empty volcano, walk through a fumarolic field, explore the interior of the lava tunnel of Gruta do Natal, and stroll through the natural pools in the parish of Biscoitos. We inform that the stop of Algar do Carvão is closed since October, and will be for 18 months, due to construction works in their visitors center.

The program that we have outlined for this day leads us to discover the geological origin of Terceira Island. We will learn how volcanoes have shaped the landscape and the way of life of its people.

On this tour we will tour part of the city of Praia Vitória, which is a historic city in the east of Terceira Island, has a beautiful beach of volcanic sand, beautiful landscapes, green areas and historic monuments such as the Miradouro do Facho.

This is a micro-production wine from the volcanic Azores islands in the North Atlantic Ocean. It is grown in volcanic basalt at sea level, less than 50m from the Atlantic. To continue the adventure, you’ll have the chance to swim in lava-formed natural pools in the village of Biscoitos. This is a complete experience that combines adventure, flavor, and natural beauty!

Passagem das Bestas, is a 4-hour walk on a 4 km trail in the interior of the island of Terceira, and takes place in a protected area belonging to the Terceira natural park. On this trail it is possible to observe relheiras (marks of ox cart wheels) that for centuries transported wood from the interior of the island) engraved in volcanic rock; be amazed by the beauty of Caldeira Guilherme Moniz (volcano crater); fall in love with the endemic and invasive flora; discover breathtaking landscapes; relax to the sound of migratory and resident birds in the Azores. The trail is of medium difficulty, on terrain with few flat parts, has a maximum elevation of 100 m, is a circular route and is approximately 4 km long.
