Listed as a National Historic Landmark District the city of Lafayette became known as the American Sector but approaching the 1830's, it was known as the Garden District. Comprised of a close network of several plantations which were parceled, sold and broken into smaller lots in which various ethnic neighborhoods consisting of the American sector, the Irish Channel, and an elite Jewish community to name a few would call home. There was also very large African American & Creole neighborhoods adjacent to the others and together were all a part of the city of Lafayette.

This is a private tour, feel safe touring safe only with the people you are traveling with. We begin in the French Quarter, the most emblematic New Orleans neighborhood. We'll discuss geography, architecture and the folks that made our fabled city in the swamp. Next weβll head upriver in a mini van to the Garden District. As we proceed through the oak-lined streets we will take in the grandeur of historic mansions and gardens and discuss the political landscape that gave birth to the Garden District. Lafayette Cemetery #1, one of the iconic New Orleansβ above ground βcities of the deadβ. From outside the cemetery walls,(all cemeteries are currently closed) we will discuss the unique burial traditions of the Crescent City. Our most popular 3 hour driving tour is an overview of New Orleans, traveling in the comfort of our luxurious Honda Odyssey minivan. As a department of the Preservation Resource Center, Save Our Cemeteries is the only non-profit tour operator directly supporting restoration, education, and advocacy in New Orleans cemeteries. St. Roch Cemetery, founded in 1874, was established by the Rev. Peter Leonard Thevis. According to legend, during the deadly outbreak of yellow fever in 1868, Rev. Thevis prayed to St. Roch, the Patron Saint of Good Health, and vowed to build a chapel to the Saint if his congregation was spared. When no one died, a shrine and a chapel were built. The locals continued to revere St. Roch for graces of welfare and remission. For decades, believers left their polio braces, glass eyes, dental plates, and other parts of their prosthetic selves when their health recovered. These are on view in the chapel which is ONLY open on the first Friday of each month from 11:00 am to noon during our tour.

A self guided adventure just minutes from the French quarter on Bayou Bienvenue. The area is teeming with wildlife; from birds, herons, docile alligators, turtles, and more. When you enter the marnina (Nola Party Barge) please go all the way down the driveway on the left hand side of the gas station into the back parking lot. On the right hand side of the parking lot you will see a sign that says kayak rentals, guiding you to the rentals and the launch site. Lifejackets must be worn at all times.
